Summary: Jon reflects on the past night, and the past weeks of his new relationship.

Author's Notes: This is for KayJay and Linsey, with thanks for their treksoap Jon and Mal, who provided the inspiration. You don't need to know anything about that ongoing story to enjoy this one. Suffice it to say, this Jon and Malcolm were no strangers to me, and their deepening relationship is always worth celebrating. After reading Alia's achingly sad story 'Not What You Want" last night, I knew I had to finish this little drabble to fight the emptiness. It was written to celebrate the deepening relationship between Jon and Malcolm in the LiveJournal treksoap story, but there is an interesting connection with Alia's story in that the Jonathan Archer in this story has also spent his life loving women, until Malcolm. It was the right time to post this anyway, but a thank you to Alia for the final push toward finishing it.

I never thought I'd find someone at this point in my life, so stretched out between the stars. I'd almost settled for a friend and a dog.

I never dreamed that the sound of my name on his lips would bring down every damned defense I'd ever built around my heart.

I never guessed that love would wear such a beautiful face, smile such a luminous smile, or light storm-grey eyes with such joy as he lies wrapped in my arms.

I never knew that lowered shields, dropped defenses, and breached walls would lead us to such a safe place.
